Microwave and Range Hood Repair Questions
Why is my microwave running but not heating?
If the light, fan and turntable all work but food stays cold, the fault is almost always in the high-voltage section that does the heating: commonly the diode, the magnetron, the capacitor or a door switch that tells the microwave the door is open. All of those sit behind the outer cover, so this is a repair for a technician rather than a home fix. Do not run the microwave empty while you wait, because running it with nothing inside can damage it further.
Is it safe to open my microwave and fix it myself?
No. A microwave’s high-voltage capacitor can hold a dangerous charge for some time after the unit is unplugged, so removing the outer cover is not safe even with the power off. Replacing a bulb or a range hood filter is fine; anything behind the cabinet should be left to a technician. If you see sparking, stop using it and unplug it.
Why is my range hood not pulling smoke out?
Start with the grease filters: when they are clogged, suction drops sharply, and most metal filters can be washed. A recirculating hood, one that does not vent outdoors, also has a charcoal filter that wears out and has to be replaced rather than cleaned. If suction is still weak with clean filters on the highest speed, the cause is usually the fan motor, a stuck damper or a blocked duct, which need inspection.
Is my microwave worth repairing or should I replace it?
It depends on the type. A countertop microwave usually costs less to replace than to repair, and the technician will say so plainly. Over-the-range and built-in microwaves are a different case: they cost more, are fitted to the cabinets, and include the vent fan for the cooktop, so a repair is often the better choice when the unit is otherwise in good condition.
How does microwave and range hood repair pricing work?
Pricing follows the part and the labour. Many over-the-range microwave repairs mean lifting the unit off its wall bracket, while a hood fan motor is often reachable from below. Because the work varies that much, we do not publish a flat rate; the technician works out the price for your specific fault on site.
Do you offer same-day microwave and range hood repair in London?
Same-day service is often available in London, but it is not something we guarantee. It depends on the day’s schedule, where you are, and whether the part your microwave or hood needs is in stock. Call with your postal code and we will tell you the soonest window we actually have.
