Dryer Repair Questions
Why is my dryer running but not heating?
On an electric dryer, check the breaker first: the drum can turn on one half of a double breaker while the heating element, which needs both halves, stays cold. Beyond that it is commonly a failed heating element, a blown thermal fuse or a faulty thermostat. On a gas dryer, make sure the gas valve behind the machine is open; after that the igniter and the gas valve coils are the usual suspects. Which part has failed needs testing with a meter.
Why does my dryer take so long to dry clothes?
Restricted airflow is the most common cause. Clean the lint screen, then check that the vent hose behind the dryer is not crushed and that the flap on the outside wall opens while the dryer runs. If the laundry goes in dripping, the washer is not spinning it out and the dryer is not the problem — see washer repair. If airflow is clear, a weak heating element or a faulty thermostat is more likely.
My dryer smells like burning. Is it safe to use?
Stop using it until the cause is found. A brief smell on the first run after a long break can be dust burning off the element, but a strong or persistent smell usually means lint has built up inside the cabinet or the vent, or a belt or drum roller is overheating. Lint build-up is a fire risk: unplug the dryer, turn off the gas supply on a gas model, and call us. If you smell gas rather than burning, leave the house and call your gas utility from outside.
Is my dryer worth repairing or should I replace it?
Dryers are mechanically simple, and most of their failures — a belt, drum rollers, a heating element, a thermal fuse — are worth repairing even on an older machine. The closer calls are a failed control board or drive motor on a dryer well past ten years old. The technician will say plainly when replacement is the better value.
How does dryer repair pricing work?
Pricing follows the part and the labour. A thermal fuse is a small part reached from the back panel; replacing drum rollers means taking the dryer apart to lift the drum out. Because the work varies that much, we do not publish a flat rate. The technician works out the price for your specific fault on site.
Do you offer same-day dryer repair in London?
Same-day service is often available in London, but it is not something we guarantee. Whether we can come today depends on the schedule, your location, and whether the part your dryer needs is in stock. Call with your postal code and we will tell you the soonest window we actually have.
